In this book I will describe how you can turn an ageing computer into an always-on server that can run web applications in the comfort of your own home or office. Together we will configure the entire server you will learn how to install CentOS, Apache, PHP and MySQL (or MariaDB) and WordPress. I will show you how you can reach your server from other computers on the network and how to create regular backups.

Perfect for the Linux newbie and those who want to get started with web applications without going "to the cloud".

LAMP Stack for Humans How to turn a laptop into a web server on your local network eBook Jay Versluis Julia Versluis

Great book, but NEVER, EVER in listing step-by-step instructions, after a step, say, but don't do that step now because you have to do something really important first as you did here "Now the orange icon disappears, and the previously greyed out Begin Installation button at the bottom right is now available. Don’t click it yet though, we still need to setup your network connection." Yes, people when going step-by-step DO try to move too fast. Deal with it. Also, including your copyright information in the clipboard output of any command line prompt you want to copy and paste from your ebook version is REALLY annoying and really inhibits the practical use of the book. You can't even copyright Linux command line prompts anyways. Please correct ASAP as these annoyances really distract from an otherwise great book!

LAMP Stack for Humans How to turn a laptop into a web server on your local network eBook Jay Versluis Julia Versluis Reviews

Good read, true to the title "LAMP Stack for Humans". I purchased this to gain some foundation for deploying a web connected server using the LAMP Stack, the book is written with the goal to deploy a network connected server running Wordpress for inter-office tasks. I think the process is similar enough for the book to be useful to use for both network and web connected servers as the end goal. The author Jay Versluis provides perspective and insight to an otherwise abstract set of command line code found in the "official documentation" and most online articles containing code snippets with a little do this and that added to it. My learning style was a good fit with how the book was written. For example, I've seen MySQL and MariaDB mentioned throughout varying web articles and official documentation leading me to believe the two software were the same or very similar but also leaving me guessing at the connection, but Jay was the first I've seen to break it down and clarify that MySQL while still open source at the moment is not being developed or supported by the Community after being acquired by Sun and then by Oracle, so a lead developer started a Community based fork of MySQL named MariaDB to ensure it continues to be available if Oracle decides to do something different with the software in the future. Its this type of insight that pulls the fragments together and makes the information more useful. At 268 pages the book is NOT a complete manual for every type of LAMP server configuration or setup and honestly the more you learn the more you realize you don't know and will need to learn, but this book is a great way to get started on the journey. Just to mention my previous experience with Linux is minimal but I otherwise know my way around a computer and how to work with servers as a user but not an administrator. I have extensive cPanel experience and I'm now looking to get under the hood more. The book is written for Centos 6 and 7 Linux distributions but has some additional chapters at the end for Debian and Ubuntu distros. I think you can help yourself a lot if you decide early on which distribution you need or want to work with. Deciding isn't as easy as it sounds, I decided to use Centos 7 and luckily have not regretted it yet.
I'd really like to see more writing from this Author, I'm sure he has a lot more to share on these subjects.
