Over the years, I’ve read every book that JoAnn Durgin has ever written. And after every book, I say, “That was my all-time favorite.” And that would be true. Until the next book came out. And I would say, “That was my all-time favorite.” And that would be true. Until the next book came out . . .
The Valentine Verse is far above and beyond my favorite of all of the books she has written. Her characters, the plot, the surprise near the end, even bringing two beloved characters into this story from one of her famous series (I’ll not tell – you’ll have to read The Valentine Verse to find out who and what series) makes this book one that you will want to keep on your bookshelf and read over and over again.
Sparks fly almost immediately when Thornton Fielding and Vara Alexandris meet at the local coffee shop in Cherish, Minnesota. Their conversation sets the tone for their relationship and throughout the book their witty banter keeps the reader smiling. The romance in The Valentine Verse is sweet and the love between Thornton and Vara is deep and true.
The sub-plot has a life of its own and the surprise near the end of the book will blow you away. I’ve not recovered yet!
Even the smallest detail in this book had a meaning and it was fascinating to see how Ms. Durgin wove every detail together to create a rich, warm and loving story. Her trademark message of the Gospel was included, showing us how God uses everything in our life for our good and for His glory.
It will be interesting to see if Thornton and Vara appear in another book – the Fielding Legacy, perhaps – and with their new friends who made an appearance in this book.

I love, love , love anything this author writes. As I read this story I thought of the word lyrical. Her words are like a sweet song that brings a feeling of warmth and content. The story is filled with Greek heritage that I was fascinated by. I loved Vara so much. She is the kind of person others gravitate to. Her warmth is evident and I loved how she is a bit guarded at times with her personal life. Her dedication to helping others is a refreshing trait.
The information about strokes is very informative and I can tell the author has done extensive research in this area. I’m sure many of us know someone who has had a stroke. It can be life changing and I admire Vara for her dedication to working with stroke patients. I did laugh when she runs into Thornton at a coffee shop. Their banter was funny at times and I found him a bit mysterious. When they meet again Vara is very surprised to see him. I have to say I didn’t see that coming myself. It’s just another brilliant way the author writes that keeps readers involved in the story. She gives subtle hints of upcoming scenes but not enough to give it away.
The story is really a lesson in forgiveness and letting go of secrets. I found Charlotte to be a wonderful character. Something has held her back from giving her life to Jesus? Will she reveal her secret? With Vara and Thornton growing closer each day, can Vara let go of a past hurt to open her heart again? I loved how the story bleneded historical places with the characters and gave readers a glimpse into their heritage . I did like the reference to NASA and Houston, Texas as its my home town. What I loved the most about the story was how strong Thornton was in his faith and how he treated women with respect. This is one story that sweeps across years and finds its way to the present where truth will set someone free. It’s so nice to read how powerful forgiveness is and when you experience it, you feel renewed and joy for a brighter future. I highly recommend this book to everyone. It’s a beautiful story filled with scripture, family, love and forgiveness.

This is an amazing story all about Love! The main characters, Thornton & Vara, meet in Cherish, MN (don't you just love the name of the town?!) in the cold months of winter. Thornton's only relative has suffered a stroke & Vara is there to help her recover her speech. Vara has been hurt in the past and is leery about opening herself up to love again. Thornton's career requires a lot of travel, which is an obstacle to Vara. Thornton is all about love and seeing where God's plan will lead in this relationship. Can Vara let go of past hurt and forgive? Can Thornton's career limit his travel to stay in one place long enough to see love grow? Thornton & Vara is not the only relationship where we see love bloom in this story. We also get to see high school friends realize their love for each other, old flames rekindle, and others with a new chance at love later in life.
But most importantly, we see Christ's love for each of us drawing us to Him. There is nothing in this life that we can do that cannot be forgiven through Christ's sacrifice and salvation. The Bible tells us "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." John 316; "Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends." John 1513 & "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 58
JoAnn Durgin never disappoints her readers. This story is yet another blessing. God has gifted JoAnn to share His love with us through her writings. This is the third time I have read The Valentine Verse since it was released this year, each time more enjoyable than the time before. I highly recommend this novel at any time of the year. Love is not just for Valentine's Day!
